US and Australia on top in China
Ryan Lochte
Lochte won by more than two seconds from Markus Rogan
The United States and Australia took a world record each and shared six gold medals at the World Short-Course Swimming Championships on Friday.

America's Ryan Lochte broke the men's 200m individual medley record in 1:53.31 seconds in Shanghai in China.

In the women's 4x100m medley relay Libby Lenton anchored Australia to a new world record of 3:51.84 sec.

America's other two golds came from Margaret Hoelzer in the 200m backstroke and Kate Ziegler in the 400m freestyle.

The American team, missing top stars Michael Phelps and Aaron Piersol, had won only one gold medal before Friday's races.

"Hopefully how the US did tonight will hype up everyone else and it will improve for tomorrow and Sunday. We'll see what happens," said 200m medley star Lochte.
