Great Britain's Jo Jackson and David Davies both won silver medals on day three of the European Short-Course Championships in Trieste. Jackson, 19, became the fourth fastest swimmer in the history of the women's 400m freestyle with a British record time of four minutes 1.12 seconds.
But she still came home behind France's Laure Manaudou, who set a world record.
Olympic bronze medallist Davies was second to four-time winner Yury Prilukov, who set a new European mark.
"I knew Manaudou was going to be quick going into the race," said Jackson. "She's a very tough girl with a world record already in the 800m.
"My race plan was to stay as close to her as I could. To get a personal best and the British record, I couldn't ask for more."
Manaudou made it three gold medals at the meet with a world record time of three minutes and 56.79 seconds.
