Simpson won the British Under-23 Squash in April |
Guernsey's Chris Simpson has said he needs to refocus on the basics after failing to qualify for the main draw at the Hong Kong Open. Simpson was beaten 3-1 by South African Stephen Coppinger at the Professional Squash Association event. The 22-year-old, who is ranked 45th in the world, told BBC Guernsey he is not happy with his current form. "I need to go back to the drawing board and work on the things that haven't gone well here," he said. "I haven't been reaching my targets in the last couple of tournaments, so I need to get a bit of confidence back." Despite going one game up and leading 5-0 in the second game, Simpson was unable to cope with Coppinger's fight-back during the qualifying match. "For some reason I lost my game plan and then once he [Coppinger] got a sniff he was pretty hard to stop," Simpson said. "I think I was also struggling a bit with my fitness, because I've been a bit run down with a cold for the last couple of weeks and I think that maybe knocked my composure off a bit."
