| King hobbles through King will face Mensur Suljovic in the next round Mervyn King played through the pain barrier to secure his place in the second round of the Embassy Darts Championship at Frimley Green. The fourth seed saw off Australia's Russell Stewart for a 3-1 victory, despite twisting his knee while retrieving his darts at the end of the first set. King was left limping around the stage, although he was able to continue playing because the injured leg was not the one he balances on when throwing. The injury looked to be affecting his form as Stewart hit back in the second set to level the scores at 1-1.
The 41-year-old from Canberra then took a 2-0 leg lead in the third, but King regrouped and claimed the third set. And he then wrapped up the match when he won the fourth set - and immediately sought treatment for his knee. "I turned away from the board at the end of the first set and my foot stayed where it was but my knee twisted," said King, who sat with his leg up after the match. "It just twisted in the air. It's happened to me before but I just wish it hadn't happened now. "I wasn't happy at all with any aspect of the way I played because I was worried about trying to walk properly. "I felt confident until it happened but then my doubles started landing at silly angles. I was obviously doing something wrong. "Hopefully I can get my leg right for my next match on Tuesday." King's next challenge will be Austria's Bosnian-born Mensur Suljovic, making his Lakeside debut this week.
The 29-year-old claimed a 3-2 victory over Holland's Vincent van der Voort, coming close to a nine-dart checkout, but failing on the penultimate shot. Markus Korhonen's first appearance at Frimley Green ended in defeat when he was beaten by Steve "Magic" Coote. The 18-year-old qualifier from Sweden, the youngest player to have appeared in the tournament during its 25-year history, went down to a 3-1 defeat against the fireman from Bolton. "I'm very happy with that - Markus has beaten me twice on the circuit," said 31-year-old Coote. "He's a brilliant prospect and I predict that he'll come back here and win the title one day. "Maybe he and I will fight it out in the final in the future." |
