Paul Tergat settles for second. 1143 Gebrselassie suddenly looks as though he is struggling as he falls back to third. 1137 Tanni Grey-Thompson makes it victory number six in London by clinching the women's wheelchair race. 1125 Three men are locked in battle for pole position as the men's race reaches its final stages. Ethiopian great Gebrselassie keeps up the pace with old track rival Paul Tergat of Kenya and world record holder Khalid Khannouchi staying close. 1122 Zakharova edges her compatriot Petrova to claim second in a time of 2:22:30, while Japanese challenger Reiko Tosa settles for fourth. 1120 The battle is on for second place as Russians Svetlana Zakharova and Lyudmila Petrova approach the finish line.
1116 Radcliffe reaches the Royal Mile with victory in her sights, having set an amazing pace all through the women's race. 1107 The lightning pace in the men's race has broken down the leading contenders. Gebrselassie and defending champion Abdelkader El Mouaziz starin at the front with the Morroccan clearly not enjoying the pace. 1103 While Radcliffe powers away at the 23-mile mark, further back Susan Chepkemei stutters on the cobbles to endure some painful vomiting. 1055 Tushar Patel beats 2001 champion Denis Lemeunier in a tight battle on the Royal Mile to claim second in the men's wheelchair race.
1052 Radcliffe reaches the 21-mile mark in a time of 1:52:06, keeping up an incredible rhythm to stay well ahead of rivals Chepkemei. 1042 At Tower BridgeThe men keep up a blistering pace with Gebrselassie still in pole position and in record-breaking mode, clocking 57:26 at the 12-mile mark. 1022 An incredible spurt by Radcliffe sees the plucky Briton run the fastest two miles ever by a women in the London Marathon. 1030 Ethiopian duo Gebrselassie and Testaye Jifar still lead the way as the world's best men continue to set an amazing pace. 1017 Pierre Fairbank suffers a nasty crash in the wheelchair race, hitting a traffic island in the middle of the roadhead on, but the Frenchman stays composed and gets back on course. 1016 The greatest runners in the world speed around the Cutty Sark with Gebrselassie still tucked behind two surging pace-makers. The runners are well within the record mark, clocking 28:36 at six miles.
1013 The pressure is on British star Radcliffe to keep up her aggressive pace as she amasses a 48-second gap over her nearest rivals. 1009 Roared on by the crowd, Radcliffe is now well clear and alone at the 12-mile mark, with Chepkemei and Tulu far behind and out of sight. Further back, Tosa from Japan and London Marathon record -holder Chepchumba lead the pack battling for fourth place. 1007 The men's pace-makers set a blistering rhythm with Gebrselassie and Pinto among the runners leading the front pack. 1000 While the world's best battle out at the front, masses of brave souls still wait to escape the bottleneck at the start line. A rhino, camel and a man holding a canoe are some of the last runners to leave Greenwich Park. 0955 The elite men make a steady start clocking four minutes 47 seconds for both of the first two miles. The slight form of Ehthiopian star Gebrselassie tucked in among the first four runners. Meanwhile Tanni Grey-Thompson, who gave birth just two months ago, is still looking good in the wheelchair race, although Paula Craig could emerge into contention.
0950 Radcliffe's early effort has paid off as she amasses an eight-second lead over the front pack of Chepkemei and Tulu approaching the 10-mile mark. 0945 The moment of truth has arrived as the elite men set off after a minute's silence, followed by a brightly garbed horde, numbering in the tens of thousands. 0942 Radcliffe makes a bold move pulling away from the leading group to step up the pace. Elsewhere the elite men are poised on the start line for the beginning of their race. The diminutive figure of distance great Haile Gebrselassie stands in the middle of an elite pack of the world's greatest runners. 0938 In the wheelchair marathon, tension mounts as defending champion Denis Lemeunier leads a mainly French contingent through the streets of London. 0936 Around 32,000 runners are gathering at the mass start line, making final preparations and toilet stops before they set off at 0945.
0932 Old track rivals Radcliffe and Tulu remain neck-and-neck leading a pack of nine other contenders as the women race towards the Cutty Sark area. 0924 The women's race witness a major development as the chasing group, which includes Chepchumba and several top Russian runners, has caught up with the leading pack. 0916 The women's race is well past the two-mile mark with the leading group consisting of Radcliffe, Tulu, Tosa, Shitaye Gemechi and Susan Chepkemei. 0915 The wheelchair contenders seer off the start line with eight-time Olympic gold medallist Tanni Grey-Thompson and defending men's champion Denis Lemeunier on the front line. Aspiring young athletes also begin their search for glory as the London Mini Marathon gets under way. 0901 Weather conditions are calm and cool, perfect to send record times crumbling. Kenyan Joyce Chepchumba moves up front with the pace-maker as Paula Radcliffe, Reiko Tosa and Derartu Tulu slot in behind. 0900 The elite women, wearing black ribbons as a sign of respect for the Queen Mother's death, burst off the start line after a minute's silence. 0855 The Duke of York arrives by helicopter to fulfill his role as official starter for the 22nd London Marathon. 0845 BST Runners begin to gather at Blackheath, waiting anxiously to start their epic slog in just one hour's time. Around 32,000 runners are getting ready for the challenge of a lifetime as the 22nd London Marathon gets under way. It promises to be an exciting showdown with arguably the best field ever for the gruelling 26.2-mile race. All the biggest names in distance running are there, including Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie and plucky British star Paula Radcliffe making their much awaited marathon debuts. The runners are set to make a staggered start at Greenwich with the elite women getting things under way at 0900. The wheelchair and mini marathon start at 0915, while the elite men and mass runners get off at 0945. | |
