| Friday, 5 April, 2002, 14:38 GMT 15:38 UK Africans celebrates London double Runners pour across the start line at Blackheath Ethiopia's Derartu Tulu and Abdelkader El Mouaziz of Morocco completed an African double as they triumphed in the elite races at the 21st London Marathon in 2001. Some 30,000 people embarked on the gruelling 26-mile run around the streets of the capital on 22 April.
Four hours after the start, almost 10,000 competitors had crossed the finish line. Half-a-million spectators lined the course to cheer on the competitors, while millions more watched on TV. Tulu, the OIympic 10,000m champion, saw off a world-class field to win a close-fought women's race in two hours, 23 minutes and 55 seconds. And El Mouaziz, the 1999 winner, romped home in the men's event in a personal best time of 2:07:09. The first British athlete across the line was Mark Steinlie, who finished an impressive sixth.
And Frenchman Denis Lemeunir was the first man across the line in the men's wheelchair discipline - despite being a late entrant in the event. The main race was started by Olympic legend Sir Steve Redgrave in Blackheath at 09:30 BST. Charity spectacular London's elite race is considered one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. But for many thousands of "fun runners" the event is all about raising valuable funds for charity and is more of a personal challenge than a race. Much of the focus this year has been on one of the celebrity fund-raisers, Redgrave, who is running his first marathon.
Half-way through his marathon, Redgrave - who was running with his wife Anne - admitted the encouragement from well-wishers was helping him towards the finish line. "This is the biggest lap of honour I've done in my life," he quipped. "The reaction from the spectators has been unbelievable - it's a very special day." Among the other celebrity runners were former world heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno and BBC Sport presenter Steve Rider. |
