Joe Swail is aiming to return to the world's top 16

Joe Swail defeated fellow Northern Ireland player Mark Allen in the first round of the German Masters in Berlin on Thursday afternoon.

The Belfast qualifier clinched a 5-3 victory over his Antrim opponent in the new world ranking tournament.

Swail progressed to the first round after hammering Belgian Hans Blanckaert 5-0 in the final qualifying round on Wednesday night.

He will play Shaun Murphy or Ryan Day in the last 16 on Friday afternoon.
