Selby had a steady but unspectacular season in 2008-09

Mark Selby suffered a surprise opening round 5-3 defeat to Stuart Bingham at the Shanghai Masters.

The 26-year-old Leicester cueman, a semi-finalist in China last year, lost the first two frames but fought back to draw level before the interval.

Bingham then restored his two-frame advantage with breaks of 110 and 48.

The world number seven could only pull one frame back before Bingham continued his good form to progress in the first ranking tournament of the season.
