Stevens had to dig deep to get past the challenge of Hendry |
Matthew Stevens withstood a late fightback by Stephen Hendry to win the Northern Ireland Trophy in Belfast. Stevens, who led 6-2 at the interval, eventually triumphed 9-7 in the first tournament of the new season.
The Welshman had early breaks of 86, 100 and 65 to put him in charge but Hendry fought back superbly in the evening session.
He recovered to only trail 8-7 but some solid potting by Stevens gave him the 16th frame and secured the victory.
