Mark Allen stunned Steve Davis at the Waterfront Hall |
Antrim's Mark Allen whitewashed former world champion Steve Davis 4-0 in the Northern Ireland Trophy in Belfast. The 19-year-old local prospect, playing his first major event, had three breaks of over 50 in his impressive win.
Joe Swail also reached round two by beating Joe Perry 4-1, while Australian Neil Robertson beat Ian McCulloch 4-0 and Ding Junhui crushed Ali Carter 4-0.
World champion Shaun Murphy beat Graeme Dott 4-2 to book a place in round three and Alan McManus beat Peter Ebdon 4-0.
Allen was delighted with his performance against Davis and is looking forward to Thursday's game against another former world champion John Higgins.
"I felt nervous for the first frame but after that I was fine," said Allen.
"I didn't get my hopes up before the game because I know what a great player Steve is, but I wasn't surprised by the way I played and it was good to cope with the pressure.
"John Higgins is one of the best players ever to lift a cue but there will be no pressure on me tomorrow and he won't know what to expect."
 | Stephen Hendry said I could improve by cutting out the risky shots |
Robertson enjoyed an equally impressive defeat of world semi-finallist Ian McCulloch, rattling in runs of 80, 56 and 73 to set up a match with Jimmy White.
World number 28 Robertson had his preparation for the tournament disrupted earlier this month when he was attacked during a night out in east London.
"I was just chatting to some friends outside a bar when this guy ran up to me and punched me. It was totally unprovoked, he was just looking for trouble," said the left-hander from Melbourne.
"I had a black eye and I couldn't play for about a week so I have only been able to practise for three or four days. I couldn't have played any better today.
"I watched Stephen Hendry's press conference after losing to him at the World Championship and he said that I could improve by cutting out the risky shots, so I've decided to do that."
