World Snooker chairman Sir Rodney Walker has written to all professional players, saying the sport must change the way it is run or risk dying. He sent out the letter to mark his 100 days in office, and warned that snooker must must be ready to adapt or suffer the consequences.
"Snooker has the potential to prosper but it must move on," he said.
"It is at a pivotal point. In the short term there will be some difficult and painful decisions to be taken."
He added: "If it is to survive and prosper as a viable professional sport, and I believe it can, there needs to be a fundamental restructure in the way the sport is governed."
He also said that television viewing figures for the Masters in January confirmed the public's continued enthusiasm for watching the sport.
An emergency general meeting of the organisation has been called for 16 March, at which proposals will be put to players about how the sport could be reshaped.
It is thought players will be asked to approve plans to put more power into Sir Rodney's hands.
