Lampe sets off from Plymouth at the start of the 2009 OSTAR

Dutch sailor Jankee Lampe has won the 2009 OSTAR transatlantic race, crossing the line in Newport, Rhode Island, 17 days after leaving Plymouth.

The 40-year-old arrived in Newport at 0510 GMT on 12 June 2009 in his Open 40, La Promesse.

Race Director David Southwood was at the finish line in Newport and told BBC Sport that Lampe was in "good spirits."

Southwood said: "Jankee arrived in the middle of the night in dense fog, but his family were waiting for him."

"It was wet and pretty miserable and there were four boats out to see him come in," Southwood added.

British sailor Rob Craigie and Italian Roberto Westerman are expected to be the next OSTAR finishers.
