British pair Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes opened up their world sailing championships campaign with two good results in the 49er class in Portugal.

The European champions notched up a win in their opening race and followed that up with a second place.

"There were some big gusts but we held on and are pleased," said Rhodes.

Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson replaced Shirley Robertson, Annie Lush and Lucy Macgregor at the top of the Yngling fleet leaderboard.

Ed Wright is in third place after coming fifth in the only Finn race of the day, in which Olympic development squad sailor Giles Scott posted a notable seventh.

In the Laser class, Paul Goodison was dealt two yellow flag penalties for illegal pumping of the sails and was forced to retire from his first race of the day, but he recovered with a fifth to finish the day third overall.

Lizzie Vickers had an outstanding day in the Laser Radial, with a first and a second seeing her up to 15th place overall, while Charlotte Dobson moved up to 10th.

Nick Dempsey is fifth overall in the men's windsurfing, while Bryony Shaw had a solid start in the women's event and two fourth-placed finishes put her seventh.
