Bateman competes in the double scull alongside Matt Wells |
Devon rower Marcus Bateman is taking nothing for granted ahead of selection for the 2011 Great Britain Senior Team. The 28-year-old is in action this weekend in the penultimate team trial at Dorney Lake near Windsor. Having won double scull silver at the 2010 World Championships, Bateman is well placed to retain his GB spot. He said: "The trials are highly pressured and intensive, however that is one of the things that makes our team successful on the World Stage." He added: "I love racing and I truly believe that these trials elevate my performance on the international stage. "It is always better to have people trying to take my place, and it will definitely be a question of survival of the fittest between now and London 2012." Joining Bateman at the Dorney Lake trials will be fellow Devon rower, Bill Lucas, who competes in the GB quadruple scull. Lucas also had a successful 2010, claiming silver at the World Championships with his crew. After the trials this weekend, the successful rowers will be called back to the final selection on 16-17 April.
