Britain's hockey teams got off to winning starts on day one of the Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney. Two corner strikes from Sarah Page led the women to a 4-1 win over China, with Charlotte Craddock and Charlotte Hartley adding the other scores.
The men defeated China 3-0 thanks to goals from Darren Cheesmen, Harry Jawana and Ashley Jackson.
However, Britain's badminton team surrendered a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 to Malaysia after a tense decider.
Chris Adcock and Gabrielle White got Team GB off to a fine start, winning the mixed doubles.
Kieran Merrilees was beaten by Mohammad Arif Abdul Latif but Michelle Cheung defeated Li Ya Lydia Cheah to put the Brits ahead again.
But White and Samantha Ward lost the women's doubles before Adcock and Ellis slumped in the men's doubles.
The festival, which is mainly taking place at Sydney's Olympic Park, will see over 1,600 young athletes competing in 16 sports over five days.
Britain are making their first appearance in the festival and have a squad of more 100 athletes.
