2009! The start of this year was definitely welcomed with a bang and a great start for me. I have been named official England Co-Captain alongside Karen Atkinson for the 2009 England Netball team, which I'm so proud of. In the Co-operative Superleague my team Brunel Hurricanes started the second half of our campaign by taking on the Northern Thunder side at home. It was a great match and start for us, winning by a comfortable 20 goals. We then played in a televised match against Leeds Carnegie, where we suffered a last minute defeat by two goals. This was a nail-biting game to watch and play in, until the dying seconds it could have been anybody's game. The result was very disappointing for us, and left us with only three days to recover and prepare for our home match against Mavericks. Unfortunately we couldn't pull a win out of the bag, and I can say that this loss was a lesson learnt, as we have to finish the season well in order to continue to be contenders for the play-offs. Mkoloma will lead he side out against Jamaica
This year has also seen two new signings brought into the Hurricanes squad in the form of former England player Chioma Matthews and New Zealand-born Louise Moffat. These two ladies are exceptional WA specialists and are a great asset to our squad. They have brought with them great enthusiasm and speedand by speed I mean F1 racing speed! Talking of speed, England will be taking on Jamaica in a home Test series in February. This will be a fast and physical series from start to finish and we will see the world's third (England) and fourth ranked (Jamaica) netball teams battling it out for national pride and bragging rights, oh and of course that world ranking! Plus you'll get to see me leading out our girls. We are also playing at the O2 Arena for the first time, something I am really excited about and I know all the other girls are too. So make sure you all get out and buy your tickets as it's gonna be BIG! I have just returned from a five-day England camp. It was selection time for the Jamaica Test series so everyone was at their best and it was very intense, just what you need as part of a solid build up to a series. Then we finished it off with a team building day at Sandhurst army base where we did a number of team building exercises which also involved the coaches and support staff. We did a lot of climbing, laughing and got a bit muddy so that was good and we are all totally raring to go! Don't forget you can email me with your questions and I will do my best to answer! See you at the Jamaica Test Series in February! Sonia xx
