Belfast's weekend wins over Nottingham and Coventry proved in vain
Belfast Giants missed out on the Elite League title despite beating Coventry on Sunday night. Champions Sheffield Steelers finished a point ahead of Belfast and Cardiff as they hammered Braehead 7-2. That meant that Belfast's 7-2 win in Coventry proved academic with Cardiff finishing ahead of the Giants on goal difference by beating Edinburgh 9-2. Mark Garside (two), Craig Peacock (two), Josh Prudden, Brandon Benedict and Dan Welsh hit Belfast's goals. The Giants had kept their title hopes alive by avenging their Challenge Cup final defeat at the hands of Nottingham as they defeated the Panthers 6-2 on Saturday. But Belfast needed Sheffield to slip up in one of their two games against Braehead over the weekend and that didn't happen. On Saturday, Jon Gleed gave the Giants the lead in the first period against Nottingham and Prudden added the second in the second period. Will Weldon pulled a goal back but Welch and Peacock struck to make it 4-1 at the end of the second period. Rob Bellamy reduced Nottingham's deficit but Michael Jacobsen and Colin Hemingway scored for the Giants. After missing out on both the Challenge Cup and Elite League titles, the Giants remaining chance of silverware will be the season-ending Play-Offs
