Tigers player-coach Tom Watkins scored the winner |
Telford Tigers caused a shock in the English Premier League by winning 5-4 at table-toppers Guildford Flames. Tigers lost 4-3 at home to Flames on Saturday, but went one better 24 hours later in their weekend double-header. "We have a great group of guys who stick together and have become a very solid group," player-coach Tom Watkins told BBC Radio Shropshire. Tigers' victory means Flames now lead Manchester Phoenix on goal difference at the top of the table. "When we went to Guildford earlier in the season we lost 8-3 because we were very open and gave up too many goals," added Watkins. "But over the last three or four weeks we have really worked on being more aware." "We have now shown we are very capable of competing with the likes of Guildford." With the scores locked at 4-4, Watkins himself scored Tigers' winning goal at Guildford in over-time. Tigers' other goals came from Luke Brittle, Dan McKriel, Josh Bruce and Andy McKinnon. In the earlier home fixture, Tigers ran the opposition close, level at 3-3 before Guildford scored a last-gasp winner.
