Marek Hornak scored twice against Sheffield |
Reformed Telford Tigers won their first point, ending 3-3 with Sheffield in normal time before the Steeldogs took a bonus point to win 4-3 in added time. "We battled well and I'm pleased we got on the board," player-coach Tom Watkins told BBC Radio Shropshire. "We created chances but we didn't bear down on them enough. We've got to play a little bit harder." In Tigers' other game of their double-head weekend, the supporters-run side went down 5-1 at Slough Jets. "I think when we get our first two points it will be massive for us," Watkins added. "We've just got to get a win. That is all it's about for the next weekend." Tigers started superbly at Slough, with Scott McKenzie putting them ahead in just 21 seconds - and they held the lead for almost half an hour. Then the Jets scored twice in quick succession, and when Tigers missed an equalising chance the home side stepped up a gear to score three more without reply. Against Sheffield, Tigers outshot their visitors 45-35 but were unable to make that superiority count. McKenzie and a double from Marek Hornak - who also had to have treatment after taking the puck in his face - meant the sides were tied 3-3 at the end of normal time and facing five minutes of sudden-death overtime. But Sheffield's Tom Squires squeezed in a winner after 43 seconds to gain the win and the extra point for the Steeldogs.
