Ice hockey

Newcastle Vipers have signed Canadian defenceman Blair Stayzer to their roster for the 2010/11 season.

The 29-year-old, who was drafted in the NHL by Calgary in 1999 and played in the AHL for St John Flames in 2001/02, can also play forward.

Vipers coach Danny Stewart said: "Blair is the perfect fit for the Newcastle Vipers and is a character guy.

"He plays a hard-nosed style. He isn't afraid to defend himself or his team-mates against anyone."

The Ontario native is a veteran of 10 seasons in the North American minor leagues, most recently in the IHL with Fort Wayne Komets.

"He has added versatility in that he can play forward and defenc, and will play in all situations whether on the penalty kill or the powerplay," added Stewart.

"Blair will bring us toughness on the back end with the ability to move the puck which is crucial to our transition game.

"I will be looking at Blair to be one of our leaders and he is a great presence in the dressing room."
