Great Britain face off against Korea: Photo from Philip Emery
Great Britain maintained their 100% start in Group B of Division One at ice hockey's World Championships, with a 2-1 victory over Korea in Slovenia. GB, who made a 26-hour bus journey after the Icelandic volcanic eruption cancelled their flight, beat Croatia 4-1 in their opening match on Saturday. Phil Hill opened the scoring in the powerplay in the 27th minute but Korea replied through Dong Hwan Song. However, Jason Hewitt netted the winner with 10 minutes left. Korea pulled goaltender Sung Je Park for an extra skater, but they could not find an equaliser as Britain held on. | This young team has grown over the the last few years and every day show more maturity GB head coach Paul Thompson |
Head coach Paul Thompson said: "If I'm being honest I was more worried about this game than yesterday's after the huge travel delays we encountered. "We got through on adrenalin yesterday after arriving here so late, today I felt we could get caught out with tiredness but the guys dug in and did a really professional job. "This young team has grown over the the last few years and every day show more maturity." Britain next face hosts Slovenia on Tuesday before games against Hungary on Wednesday and Poland two days later. They are competing in Division One of the tournament, which equates to world ice hockey's second tier. The top nations, including Canada and the United States, take part in the main World Championship event in Germany next month. Should Britain win their group, they would earn the right to join those leading nations in the top division of next year's World Championships in Slovakia. But GB are considered underdogs in Group B, with hosts Slovenia and Hungary the favourites. Britain won a bronze medal in the same group at last year's event.
