Barrie Moore celebrates his Sunday night strike at the Skydome Arena. |
Coventry Blaze moved up to second place in the Elite League thanks to back-to-back victories over Edinburgh Capitals. The defending champions won 6-2 at the Skydome on Sunday following a 6-3 success in Scotland the night before. A goal in the home win was enough for Canadian forward Barrie Moore to break into the top 10 of the club's all-time leading scorers on 103 goals. Blaze are still a massive 11 points behind leaders Sheffield Steelers although they do have a game in hand. The weekend got off to the best possible start for Coventry with Dan Carlson netting in the opening period in Edinburgh. The home side responded swiftly through Sean Perkins before Russ Cowley netted on the powerplay. Mark Hurtubise levelled for Edinburgh in the second but Adam Calder (two) and Greg Wood ensured Blaze had a three-goal cushion going into the final period. Perkins gave Capitals brief hope with his second before Ben O'Connor wrapped up the scoring with his sixth of the season. There were plenty more goals at the Skydome the following night with eight more scored. Martin Cingel and Joe Distin scored either side of a Sylvain Deschatelets effort to give Edinburgh a surprise lead at the first interval. Moore then scored his 103rd goal for Blaze before Deshcatelets edged the home side ahead in the second period. Carlyle Lewis, Calder and Leigh Jamieson completed the scoring.
