The Belfast Giants kept their slim Elite League hopes alive by claiming a 5-4 over-time victory over Basingstoke at the Odyssey Arena on Saturday night. Colin Shields put Belfast ahead before Brent Hughes and Mike Olynyk replied to put Bison ahead. Shields, Steve Thornton and Shane Johnson struck to put the Giants 4-2 up but Hughes and Ross Bowers replied before George Awada's over-time winner. Belfast face Basingstoke away on Sunday night (1800 GMT). New Giant Jason Rushton made his presence felt right at the start of the game by incurring a five-minute penalty for fighting with Basingstoke's Jeremy Cornish, who received the same sanction.
