Newcastle Vipers have announced that player-coach Rob Wilson is to receive a testimonial game in recognition of his service to North East ice hockey. A Wilson select side will face a North East All Stars team on Wednesday, 25 February at Newcastle Arena, with face-off at 1915 GMT. Vipers co-owner Paul Ferone confessed his pride at deciding to reward his former team-mate for his efforts. "If any individual deserves recognition for his dedication it's Rob," he said. Wilson has been involved in ice hockey for more than 20 years, including spells with Newcastle Jesters and the current Vipers set-up, but has decided to hang up his skates at the end of the 2008-09 season. During his time in the UK, Wilson has also represented the GB National Program at the top level for many years and is now assistant coach of the programme. He admitted he was touched by the offer of a testimonial and hoped to thank supporters and team-mates for their support. | 606: DEBATE | "I am very proud to have a testimonial match and I am really looking forward to seeing so many people who have helped me throughout my career," he said. "I look forward to suiting up with some familiar faces, who I am sure the fans will be happy to see, and also the fans themselves who have been great to me over the years. "I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have played ice hockey professionally. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with all British clubs and I look forward to moving forward with the Vipers here in the North East."
