Chelmsford Chieftains defeated local rivals Romford Spitfires to go top of the ENL Division Two South. The Chieftains won 6-2 at the Rom Valley Stadium to take a one point lead over Invicta Mustangs into 2009. The visitors were 3-0 up by the half-way mark after scores from Danny Hammond, BT Williams and Jerry Pavlus. The Spitfires hit back with two quick-fire strikes, before the Chieftains extended their lead through Pavlus, Darren Brown and Lee Brears. Chieftains head coach Dean Birrell admitted they had been thoroughly tested by their local rivals: "We were forced to play and it proves that if you put the performances and effort in you can push any team hard and the Spitfires did that." The Chelmsford outfit's focus will now switch to ENL Cup action where they face League One side Invicta Dynamos at the Riverside Ice and Leisure centre on Sunday, 4 January.
