Cardiff Devils failed to stop Sheffield Steelers' winning run, goals from Mark Thomas and Joey Talbot giving the visitors a 2-0 win in Cardiff Bay.
But the Elite League clash was overshadowed by a mass brawl at the end involving every player in each squad.
The simmering rivalry exploded as Jody Lehman and Brad Voth fought then Andrew Sharp caught referee Mike Hicks in the face as he tried to spear Doug MacIver.
"That's one of the worst incidents I've seen," said Devils coach Gerad Adams.
"We're going hard at the league, I want this guy [Sharp] banned for a minimum of 20 games."
Steelers coach David Matsos says he will wait and see what decision the league comes to on Sharp's case before responding.
"There isn't any point at second guessing what the league will decide," he told the club's website.
"We will wait and see what comes our way. It was a heated end to the game, an emotional night."
The Devils travel to Nottingham Panthers on Saturday and host Basingstoke Bison on Sunday.
