Steve Thornton's side was easily defeated in Sheffield on Saturday

The Giants suffered a blow to their Elite League title hopes after a heavy defeat by the leaders in Sheffield on Saturday night.

Jonathan Phillips scored late in the first period to put the Steelers ahead and Rod Sarich made it 2-0 midway through the second period.

Scott Basiuk, Doug Sheppeard and Jeff Legue were on target in the third period to complete an easy victory.

Belfast were beaten 5-2 by Manchester at the Odyssey on Friday night.
