Smital scored the winning penalty against Sheffield on Saturday |
Back-to-back wins restored Guildford to the top of ice hockey's Premier League after an unsure start to the season. Czech import Lukas Smital's penalty shot gave the Flames victory at home to Sheffield on Saturday after the teams had drawn 2-2 in normal time. A trio of short-handed goals and a strong performance from netminder Joe Watkins produced an impressive 7-3 victory at Peterborough on Sunday. Flames now lead Peterborough by two points at the top of the league. But the Phantoms, whose early season form has been impressive, have two games in hand. Guildford, who are favourites for the title, have made heavy weather of recent home games, losing to both Wightlink and Telford at the Spectrum.
