Shane Johnson was on target for the Belfast Giants

The Belfast Giants moved two points clear at the top of the Elite League by thumping Basingstoke Bison 8-1.

They are out on their own as rivals Nottingham Panthers were in Challenge Cup action on Sunday.

Colin Shields scored a hat-trick while the other Giants scorers were Paul Deniset, Shane Johnson, Mark Morrison, Paul Sample and Graeme Walton.

The Giants are on 14 points after eights game while Nottingham are on 12 with a game in hand.

On Saturday Belfast had a 4-3 home win over Edinburgh Capitals.
