Coventry Blaze have secured the services of record-breaking goalscorer Adam Calder for two more seasons.

In his 251 games for Blaze, Calder has scored 168 goals with a further 185 assists and last season was named the Elite League's player of the season.

Coach Paul Thompson said: "I'm delighted that the league MVP will once again be wearing the number 25.

"It would have been a huge challenge for me to replace Adam if he'd moved on," he added.

The Canadian, who first joined Coventry at the start of the 2004/05 season, has won seven Elite League trophies and has been an Elite League first-team all-star on three occasions.

Calder left the Skydome after winning the grand slam in his first year but returned from Swedish club Vaxjo Lakers midway through the next season.

Despite more interest from other top European clubs the forward has decided to stay in the UK.

He's a quiet guy but carries phenomenal presence in the room and on the ice

The news delighted his coach who lost his captain earlier this week after Sylvain Cloutier decided to retire from ice hockey.

Thompson continued: "When a player has a season like Adam did last year, you know that he is going to be attracting interest from all over Europe.

"It's no secret that several clubs were trying desperately to sign him which has made it a really topsy-turvy off season in terms of the 'is he staying or is he going' saga.

"He's a quiet guy but carries phenomenal presence in the room and on the ice.

"With Sylvain retiring, Adam is one of the players I'm going to be looking to for leadership and I have no doubt that he's more than capable of delivering and carrying on where he left off last season."
