Strachan has been impressed by Bernier's team ethic |
Hull Stingrays have signed Canadian enforcer Jonathan Bernier for the 2008/09 Elite League season. The defenceman, 23, finished last term for Wichita Thunder after starting the season for Arizona Sundogs. Rays coach Rick Strachan said: "He is tough and is not afraid to drop the gloves. His first job will be to protect his team-mates - he knows that. "His second job will be to play solid hockey. He is a great team guy and will stand up for his team-mates." Bernier had 25 fights last term, taking his tally to 51 in the last two campaigns. Strachan said: "He is young and has a long way to go but this is an opportunity for him to improve. He will surprise people with his hockey ability." The Stingrays are looking to improve on their first couple of seasons in the Elite League, having finished in the bottom two in the previous two campaigns.
