Nottingham Panthers had a mixed weekend of Elite League action, following up a poor display in the loss to Edinburgh with an impressive win over Newcastle. Panthers had lots of possession against the Capitals on Saturday but despite a Corey Neilson goal, the visitors won thanks to Doug Christiansen's double.
But on Sunday Panthers romped past Newcastle Vipers 3-0.
Kevin Bergin grabbed the first, Sean McAslan made it 2-0 and Patrik Wallenberg wrapped up the win late on.
But the victory was built on a strong defensive display which saw goalkeeper Tom Askey secure a seventh Panthers shutout this season.
There was nothing between the teams in the opening session with chances being created at either end.
But the visitors got the breakthrough when McAslan teed up Bergin for a one-timer - his 17th goal of the season.
McAslan bagged his 31st goal of the campaign on the rebound to double that lead.
And although the Vipers dominated the final period, they could not find a way past the excellent Askew and Wallenberg completed the scoring 89 seconds from the end.
After a goalless first period on Saturday at the Ice Centre, Panthers outshot Edinburgh in the second.
But they failed to make the most of their dominance and were made to pay when Christiansen stunned the home support with the only goal of the period.
Neilson grabbed his 14th goal of the season to level early in the third but the visitors forged ahead for the second time when Christiansen fired home his second goal of the game.
And despite Panthers outshooting the Capitals 20-5 in the third, the Scottish side held on for victory.
