Newcastle forward Shaun Johnson played his 1,000th match in British ice hockey but the occasion was soured as Vipers slipped to a 3-1 defeat in Belfast. Belfast took advantage of an injury-hit defence to take a 2-0 lead through Mark Dutiaume and Trevor Johnson.
Vipers winger Todd Jackson grabbed a consolation before the Giants finished off with an empty-net goal late on to clinch the victory on Wednesday.
Basingstoke Bison are up next for the Vipers on Saturday, 26 January.
Meanwhile, a new addition to the Vipers squad is expected to be confirmed on Thursday.
