Noble Prince helped McCoy reach yet another landmark |
Champion jockey Tony McCoy has ridden his 200th winner of the season for the first time in six years. The 36-year-old Northern Irishman, who has won 15 consecutive jockeys' titles, last reached the landmark in the 2004/05 campaign. He reached 200 winners with a win on Noble Prince in the Jewson Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He then completed a 34-1 double when Albertas Run completed back-to-back wins in the Ryanair Chase. "It's much easier riding horses that are going well than those that are not," said McCoy after Noble Prince's win, which was his first of the 2011 Festival. | McCOY'S SEASONAL WINNERS TOTAL 1994/95 - 74 1995/96 - 195 1996/97 - 189 1997/98 - 253 1998/99 - 186 1999/2000 - 245 2000/01 - 191 2001/02 - 289 (a British jumps record) 2002/03 - 256 2003/04 - 209 2004/05 - 200 2005/06 - 178 2006/07 - 184 2007/08 - 140 2008/09 - 186 2009/10 - 195 |
"I'd forgotten I only needed one more for my 200th winner of the season." McCoy is set to win his 16th jockeys' title as he holds a comfortable lead over nearest rival Richard Johnson. Johnson is currently 61 winners behind McCoy with the season, which started on 25 April, due to finish on Saturday, 23 April at Sandown Park. McCoy has broken a succession of records since he became champion for the first time in 1996. He rode a record 289 winners in the 2001-02 season and has been victorious in more than 3,300 races in all. Last year, McCoy won his first Aintree Grand National in 15 attempts on board Don't Push It and was voted the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He clocked up his 100th win of the season with a double at Ludlow in October.
