Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon falls victim to frost

Sunday's meeting at Huntingdon, including the high-profile Peterborough Chase - the track's biggest race of the year - was abandoned because of frost.

Clerk of the course Andrew Morris ruled that the track was frozen during his third inspection of the morning.

"We gave the meeting every chance, but parts of the course are still frozen and won't be fit for racing so we've knocked it on the head," he said.

The meeting had already been postponed once from Thursday because of frost.

Morris added: "We were forecast plus one degree [Celsius] overnight but we got to minus four, which caught everyone by surprise."

The Peterborough Chase was due to feature last year's winner Deep Purple, trained by Evan Williams.

Also entered were former winner Racing Demon and veteran Ollie Magern, along with Riverside Theatre, who is owned by actor James Nesbitt.

A host of top horses, including One Man, Edredon Bleu and Best Mate have won the Peterborough Chase in the past.

Lingfield's national hunt meeting on Saturday was also abandoned due to snow and frost, and replaced by an all-weather fixture at the same venue that afternoon.
