Tom Queally rides Frankel, the first of his two winners at Newmarket
Tom Queally and Henry Cecil completed an impressive double with wins for Frankel and Twice Over in the Dewhurst and Champion Stakes at Newmarket. Frankel produced a stunning sprinting display to win the Dewhurst Stakes by two and a quarter lengths, before Twice Over took a second Champion Stakes. Frankel is now 5-4 favourite for next year's 2000 Guineas. "He's a superstar, and it's nice to have done it when it mattered. He's very special," said Queally. "He got a bit of a bump on leaving stalls and that set him alight, but he quickened up well and put the race to bed. "He won very well and he never had to hit him. It was lovely and I'm very lucky to have him." Roderic O'Connor and Glor Na Mara took second and third respectively but previously unbeaten colts Dream Ahead and Saamidd disappointed. Queally also heaped praise on trainer Cecil after Twice Over delivered a hugely popular and emotional Group One double for the legendary trainer. "Henry gets them here 100% right and my job is easy. It's worked out today, it's been amazing. | 606: DEBATE |
"This horse has had a lot of near-misses and it's great he's come up trumps today. It's great for the horse and great for Henry. It's a magnificent day." Twice Over overcame a spirited effort by early pace-setter Debussy, who faded in the final stages to third, with favourite Vision D'etat second. In the third major race of the day at Newmarket, jockey Louis-Philippe Beuzelin guided Aim to Prosper to victory in the Cesarewitch Heritage Handicap after a strong challenge from La Vecchia Scuola in the final four furlongs. Outsider, Plymouth Rock, finished third.
