New favourite Fame and Glory is on course for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after winning the Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh at odds of 1-12. The Aidan O'Brien-trained Coronation Cup winner was installed as market leader for the Arc in October after Harbinger suffered a serious injury. He beat 66-1 shot Dixie Music and Grand Admiral for an O'Brien one-two-three. Meanwhile, O'Brien has next year's 2000 Guineas favourite after Zoffany was a surprise winner of the Phoenix Stakes. The 3-1 chance claimed the scalp of odds-on favourite Strong Suit, who could only finish third. He found a late gap to give O'Brien his 11th win from the last 13 runnings of the Group One contest. With Spin claiming the opener, the top Irish trainer claimed a treble and Fame and Glory is among a strong team he is preparing for honours later in the season. "His next run could be in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown or the Arc trial at Longchamp," said O'Brien. "After that we'll have a look at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe." Fame and Glory was second to the Sea The Stars in the 2009 Epsom Derby before going on to win the Irish version. | 606: DEBATE |
As a four-year-old he has now won three times at the Curragh to supplement his Coronation Cup success at Epsom in June. Fame and Glory is rated around a 3-1 chance to win the Arc, which is Europe's richest horse race, and will be broadcast live on the BBC on Sunday 3 October.
