Trainer James Given saddles maiden Royal Ascot winner

Horse racing

Lincolnshire trainer James Given claimed his maiden victory at Royal Ascot as Dandino won the King George V Stakes on Thursday.

The three-year-old, trained by Given at Willoughton and ridden by Paul Mulrennan, won by three quarters of a length from London Stripe and Caucus.

Given told BBC Lincolnshire: "It's a meeting I've been to for several years.

"It's the hardest place in the whole racing calendar to win and it's a very rewarding feeling to have done it."

Given was delighted to see Dandino claim his fourth consecutive victory ahead of London Stripe, trained at Newmarket by Sir Michael Stoute.

"Sir Michael had been very bullish beforehand, very confident of winning," Given said.

"We need days like this where we can show that we can compete on the biggest stages with the biggest yards.

"Hopefully it will attract new clients who can see we can do the job with the right horse."
