Lillie Langtry wins Coronation Stakes The 7-2 favourite Lillie Langtry gave trainer Aidan O'Brien his first win of the 2010 Royal Ascot meeting with success in the Coronation Stakes. The three-year-old, ridden by Johnny Murtagh, overhauled fellow Irish challenger Gile Na Greine within the last furlong. It was a welcome return to form for the filly after she suffered an injury at last year's Breeders' Cup. Gile Na Greine (25-1) was second ahead of Jacqueline Quest (6-1). It was more disappointment for Jacqueline Quest, who was demoted to second after passing the post in front in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. Gile Na Greine, trained by Jim Bolger and ridden by Kevin Manning, had put up a bold effort from the front before the winner wore her down to win by a length-and-a-quarter. O'Brien said: "We are delighted, we always thought she was a very good filly. "She was a very good filly last year, she had a little injury at the back-end and it's all credit to everyone for getting her back. "She was off all through the winter. We started her off in the Irish Guineas and she ran a lovely race there - we were delighted with her and were looking forward to coming here. | 606: DEBATE |
"We'll have to decide whether she stays at a mile or steps up to a mile and a quarter." For Murtagh it was a welcome return to the winners enclosure after a relatively lean time for the Ballydoyle stable. "You can get carried away at Ballydoyle riding Group One winner after Group One winner so it has been a bit testing," he admitted. "But you can't be feeling sorry for yourself. "I have had a few seconds and you need a bit of luck - I have got it today. "She's a champion and I thought she was by far our best filly last year - going to America I was telling Aidan how far we were going to win the Breeders' Cup by. "She has speed, heart and a great temperament and Aidan has nursed her along. "I thought she was one of my better rides of the week and I think it rode like a pretty strong Coronation." The Murtagh-O'Brien were soon celebrating a second winner of the day when the 2-1 favourite Mikhail Glinka won the Queen's Vase. Murtagh described the horse as possibly being "a Gold Cup horse of the future." Earlier, Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes continued their excellent run of form at Royal Ascot as Memory gave the pair a third winner of the week in the Albany Stakes. The daughter of Danehill Dancer showed an impressive change of gear when urged on by Hughes and got up to win by a head from Hayley Turner on Margot Did. There was another famous Frankie Dettori dismount in the winners' enclosure as Monterosso turned in an impressive display to land the King Edward VII Stakes. The horse, who went off at 7-2, excelled on the step up to a mile and half for trainer Mark Johnston to pass the post two-and-a-quarter lengths ahead. The 13-8 favourite Rainbow Peak claimed victory in the Wolferton Handicap for delighted jockey Neil Callan and trainer Michael Jarvis.
