Byword (5-2 fav) won the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot for French trainer Andre Fabre and his 21-year-old jockey Maxime Guyon.

The colt was too fast for Henry Cecil's Twice Over, who nevertheless gave owner Khalid Abdullah a one-two in the race.

Earlier Rainfall (8-1) set a course record and became the first filly since 1991 to win the Jersey Stakes.

Mark Johnston's three-year-old battled all the way to the line with Red Jazz, before rallying under Ryan Moore.

Moore made it two in two when driving home Strawberrydaiquiri, the grey just prevailing after a keen battle with Spacious in the Windsor Forest Stakes.

As the lead between the two changed hands several times, Sir Michael Stoute's filly showed her defiance to get back in front where it mattered to win by a short head at 9-2.

The day's feature race yielded the second French-trained winner of the week when Byword scored by half a length from the Twice Over, with long-time leader Tazeez another three-quarters of a length away third.

Tazeez was content at the head of affairs in the 10-furlong Group 1, with Debussy and German challenger Wiener Walzer also close up.

Guyon steadily moved Byword into fourth place and the four-year-old, who had finished second to Tuesday's Queen Anne heroine Goldikova on his latest start, bounded into the lead and quickly went clear.

Despite a strong finish from Twice Over, Guyon clung on fairly comfortably for his first winner at a UK racecourse in his first Ascot ride.

Fabre said: "The horse had the ability to win the race, but I was a bit worried about the inexperience of the jockey.

"He had a perfect ride without any bumps. He has matured. He wasn't trained much at three because he had a virus and now he is really coming to himself.

Trainer lauds Byword's 'perfect ride'

"He is a horse that can go for the big mile races, he won't go further than 10 furlongs, maybe something like the Prix Jacques le Marois next. We'll discuss it with the Prince."

Cecil said: "[Twice Over] got blocked in and couldn't get out, and then he was too far back. He ran a super race but it wasn't enough.

"It was such a mess of a race that he was taken too far back. I hope we'll go to the Champion Stakes, but that's up to the Prince."

Meanwhile, Frankie Dettori got on the scoresheet when Invisible Man burst through inside the closing stages to win the Royal Hunt Cup.

Wearing blinkers for the first time, the Godolphin four-year-old managed to find a gap up the far-side rail to strike at odds of 28-1.

And Maqaasid (9-4 fav) won the Queen Mary Stakes, a Group 2 five-furlong sprint for two-year-old fillies, to give jockey Richard Hills a winner for trainer John Gosden.

Finally, there was consolation for trainer Cecil in the last race of the day when Timepiece (5-1) won the Sandringham Handicap.
