England's World Cup match will be shown on big screens at York |
York Racecourse hosts the biggest weekend of its season so far with the meeting on 11 and 12 June. The feature race on Saturday is the £100,000 Reg Griffin Memorial Trophy over six furlongs. Clerk of the course William Derby told BBC Radio York: "It's one of those really competitive sprint handicaps where anyone can win it. "Yorkshire trainers like David Nicholls, Richard Fahey, Tim Easterby will be the ones to watch." He added: "Who will win is a difficult one. We'll see nearer the time and see what the ground is like and who wins that big race. | The wider racing world will start to look towards Royal Ascot next week and this is a real sort of taster of the week ahead |
"It's over in a minute so blink and you miss it buts it's good fun." The race is part of the 40th annual MacMillan Charity Day and Derby said it is one of the highlights of the year at the Knavesmire. "It's a really exciting day for us with the most valuable race card on that day," he said. "The wider racing world will start to look towards Royal Ascot next week and this is a real sort of taster of the week ahead. "We've got some great racing, some really valuable races and some really good race horses coming. "But for us as a team it's all about our charity commitment. We only race 17 days a year so it's an exciting time for us. "York as a racecourse stands out by it's great racing and the facilities we have but also the atmosphere generated by the people who come."
