A photo finish was needed before Supaseus was confirmed as the winner |
Supaseus, trained by Hughie Morrison and ridden by Travis Block, won the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket. The 16-1 shot came home by a nose ahead of Tartan Gigha and Nanton (both 33-1) while Applause was fourth. Tartan Gigha made the early break and came out of the pack to throw down a strong challenge for in-form trainer Mark Johnston. But Supaseus, who had not won since Royal Ascot last year, kept sticking his neck out and just claimed victory. "Mr Morrison said if we got an easy lead we were happy enough to break," said Block. "All credit to Mr Morrison for getting this horse back and I'm just thankful I got the ride on him. "Driving here today I thought he doesn't feel like a horse who is fast enough to make it in the Cambridgeshire." Elsewhere, Varenar, trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre and ridden by Stephane Pasquier, won the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp. The 20-1 shot finished ahead of Sweet Hearth (40-1) while the hot 9-4 favourite Goldikova was third. Goldikova looked like landing the spoils when she took to the front but ran out of steam and was soon caught. Sweet Hearth entered the challenge before Varenar came into contention with a strong run finishing ahead of both in the narrowest of finishes. "I do not know what happened," said Goldikova trainer Freddie Heard. "They went a gallop, but that is the name of the game. She didn't quicken. Turning into the straight she did not pick up and when he (Peslier) asked her she stayed on at the one pace. "She might have used herself too much early on, but you couldn't say for sure. For the moment she is going to the Breeders' Cup, but nothing is definite and we will have to just see." Meanwhile, Christophe Soumillon was sixth on Oiseau de Feu on his first ride back after he fractured his elbow last month.
