Johnston ends dry spell at York

North Yorkshire trainer Mark Johnston enjoyed a successful second day of the Ebor Festival at York on Wednesday.

Whispering Gallery came in first in the opening race of the day with stable-mate Yes, Mr President third.

Johnston told BBC Radio York: "We've not had a York victory for over a year so I'm delighted."

"Whispering Gallery is a really good horse and also a very progressive horse. Yes, Mr President ran really well in third as well."

Another of Johnston's horses, Drill Sergeant, claimed second place in the second race of the day.

"He's gone into that race only having run over two miles once before which was in Dubai and was very unsuccessful," Johnston said.

"We were a little bit unsure as to whether he would get the trip but in hindsight jockey Joe Sayers could have set a faster pace early on and if he could ride it again would do."

Johnston said it was good to be back on form.

"By yesterday we were starting to wonder what we needed to do to get back in form at York.

"It used to be such a happy hunting ground and it's been a lean spell over the last year-and-a-half so it's great to be back in form."
