Laa Rayb ran out an impressive winner under Jimmy Fortune |
The 25-1 chance Laa Rayb sprung a surprise with victory in the Totesport Mile on the fourth day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting. The five-year-old, wearing blinkers for the first time, struggled for form earlier in the season. But under Jimmy Fortune, he looked strong on the inside rail and made the most of the gaps that arrived. Meanwhile, 6-5 favourite Dick Turpin landed the Group Two Richmond Stakes for two-year-olds. The talented Richard Hannon-trained horse took time to get into top gear but he raced away in the final furlong to power clear for his third consecutive win and mark himself out for next year's Classics. But Laa Rayb was the biggest-priced winner of the week so far as Mark Johnston secured his fourth winner of the Festival. The horse's last win was a Group Three race in France last August but he was always travelling kindly for jockey Fortune with Spectait in second, two-and-a-quarter lengths back. | 606: DEBATE |
Docofthebay was third for champion jockey Ryan Moore, with Webbow fourth. Fortune said: "Mark told me to make the running, but he missed the kick. "When that happens here you have to drop them out and hope for a run through - I don't think I've ever had an easier run round. "The ground on the rail is so much better and he's won like a good horse. The blinkers have obviously made a difference." Johnston added: "If we had a good draw I thought we would win the race, but Dubai's Touch or Lovelace would have been the two I thought would have been most likely to win. "The winner is of Group Two calibre and has a few miles on the clock. "We gave him a nice break coming here, and that seems to have made the difference - along with the blinkers. "He's perhaps not looked in love with the game in the past, but producing him right on the day is the key."
