Replay - Art Connoisseur wins Golden Jubilee Stakes Michael Bell's 20-1 shot Art Connoisseur caused a major upset by winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes on the fifth day at Royal Ascot. The three-year-old, ridden by Tom Queally, came home ahead of Cannonball while Lesson In Humility was third with the favourite J J The Jet Plane fourth. "He worked very nicely but this is still a big surprise," admitted Bell. "I thought he was a boy against men, but he answered every call and Tom gave him a peach of a ride." J J The Jet Plane was smartly away and made the running from Duff and Ialysos. Reaction - Art Connoisseur win 'a big surprise' But the favourite faded out of contention in the final quarter-mile as Art Connoisseur got a dream run down the stands rail and burst to the front as Cannonball stayed on strongly for second, just a neck behind. Lesson In Humility (33-1) ridden by Karl Burke finished a further two-and-a-half lengths away. After the race Bell revealed that his horse had been injured only a few weeks ago. "I would have been more confident but a month ago he popped a splint and was very sore on it," said Bell. | 606: DEBATE |
"He swam twice a day for a fortnight, then he came back in and has been cantering for a fortnight." "It's great to be on board and the horse did it very well. I just gave him time, got a split and it was do or die then up the rails," added Queally. "He idles in his work and only does as much as he has to, but I gave him a couple of cracks and he knuckled down great. Big races and big winners is what it's all about." Earlier, Bronze Cannon, ridden by Jimmy Fortune, claimed the Hardwicke Stakes. The John Gosden-trained 8-1 shot came home by half a length ahead of Frankie Dettori on Campanologist while Dansant was third. "He won the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket and picked up a 3lb penalty for this," said Gosden. "We were always going to come here but it is difficult with a penalty. "Frankie told me at the start of the week he thought this was his best chance of a winner but our horse has shown lots of courage, given them 3lb and beat the lot of them." High Standing (6-1) came with a devastating late run to grab the Wokingham Stakes. William Haggas's horse, ridden by champion jockey Ryan Moore, came home by a nose to deny Dettori on Asset in the six-furlong handicap. Rock Of Rochelle was third with long-time leader Markab fourth. Meanwhile Drill Sergeant (14-1) and Record Breaker gave Mark Johnston a one-two in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes. Martyr was a length behind in third with Young Mick fourth.
