Phoenix Tower finished second in four Group One outings this season |
Phoenix Tower is out of the Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday and has been retired to stud. The four-year-old colt banged a tendon and the injury is considered to be severe enough to end his career with trainer Henry Cecil. Teddy Grimthorpe, spokesman for owner Khalid Abdulla, said: "Scans showed a small tear in the tendon which represented an unacceptable risk." Cecil could still be represented in the Group One race by Twice Over. The three-year-old finished third in his only Group One outing this season, the St James's Palace Stakes at Ascot. A total of 12 entries stand their ground at the five-day declaration stage for the Champion Stakes including Derby winner New Approach and two entries from John Gosden, in Pipedreamer and Upton Grey. Hebridean is the only entry from Aidan O'Brien with Famous Name from Dermot Weld completing the Irish challenge. French raiders Full Of Gold and Russian Cross have also been declared with Linngari, Traffic Guard, City Leader and Staying On making up the rest of the field.
