Rainbow View's odds at next year's 1000 Guineas have been reduced |
Bookie's favourite Rainbow View won the May Hill Stakes to confirm herself as one of the best two-year-old fillies seen so far this season. In the main race of Ladies' Day at the St Leger meeting, jockey Jimmy Fortune but made his move two furlongs out to cruise to victory. "Jimmy said it felt like a piece of work for her and he rode her well," said trainer John Gosden. Snoqualmie Girl finished second with Lahaleeb third. The impressive performance immediately made Rainbow View a 5-2 shot for next year's 1000 Guineas with one bookmaker, and a 8-1 chance with another for the 2009 Oaks at Epsom. "We'll have a look at the Fillies' Mile now and we'd love to see some sunshine in this country," Gosden added. "We'll take it one step at a time and see what we think after the Fillies' Mile - next year is a long way off." | Cornelius Lysaght column |
In the Weatherbys Insurance 300,000 2-Y-O Stakes, Frankie Dettori - who will ride Conduit in Saturday's Classic - treated the Ladies' Day crowd to his trademark flying dismount after he rode home on Awinnersgame. Michael Hills kicked for the winning post first aboard favourite Damien but Dettori threw everything he had at the Jeremy Noseda-trained horse and got up to win by a neck, with the pair pulling five lengths clear in a nip-and-tuck finish.
