Juddmonte success for Marmalade

Jockey Johnny Murtagh brings home Duke of Marmalade to victory at Newmarket
Duke of Marmalade built on his success at Ascot in June

Duke of Marmalade won the Juddmonte International Stakes at Newmarket to claim his fifth straight Group One win.

The 4-6 favourite, with Johnny Murtagh on board, gave trainer Aidan O'Brien an 18th Group One success of the season as he targets the world record of 26.

Phoenix Tower, a 12-1 shot, was his nearest challenger with Epsom Derby hero New Approach (2-1) only third.

"Duke is a very durable, consistent horse with a great will to win on both soft and firm ground," said Murtagh.

The much-awaited showdown between Duke of Marmalade and New Approach, who had not run since his thrilling Derby win in June, had been postponed on Tuesday when York's Ebor Festival was washed out.

The four-year-old winner's previous four consecutive big-race victories included a battling performance in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

Murtagh added: "I am a very lucky jockey - it's very easy to ride a horse of his calibre, with his balance and physique."

Meanwhile, John Gosden's Centennial returned to winning ways, springing a 12-1 surprise in the rescheduled Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur at Goodwood.

Winner of the Classic Trial at Sandown earlier in the season, he had been disappointing recently.

However, sent to the front from the outset under Jimmy Fortune, the Dalakhani colt held off Top Lock to win by one and a half lengths.

Patkai, the odds-on favourite, failed to handle the track well, as did Godolphin's expensive yearling Meydan City.
