Trabolgan storms to Hennessy win
Mick Fitzgerald and Trabolgan on their way to victory in last year's Royal & SunAlliance Chase at Cheltenham
Trainer Nicky Henderson will have high hopes for his horse Trabolgan
Trabolgan defied a top weight of 11st 12lbs to hold off French raider L'Ami by 2 lengths in the Hennessy Gold Cup.

The 13-2 shot travelled well throughout the 3m 2f race and stayed on strongly in the run-in to hand trainer Nicky Henderson his first Hennessy triumph.

It was also a fairytale result for jockey Mick Fitzgerald, who returned from a broken neck earlier this week.

Cornish Rebel, the 11-2 favourite, was third, 1 lengths behind L'Ami (10-1), with Comply or Die (12-1) in fourth.

Trabolgan's delighted owner Trevor Hemmings said: "I thought like most people would that my Grand National winner (Hedgehunter) was the only big one I was going to have.

It's 20 years since a horse carrying this weight won this race

"This is fantastic. Mick kept saying he would love to ride him. Obviously he damaged his neck but he kept believing in it and kept on saying if he rode him he'd win it (the Hennessy).

"Nicky's always had faith in the horse from the beginning. We bought him as a yearling, we've nursed him all the way through, which is a lovely thing to do, and it's only his fifth run over fences.

"It's more than 20 years since a horse carrying this weight won this race. He really is a lovely animal."

Lord Of Illusion made the early running from King Harald as the leading players bided their time in Newbury's feature race on Saturday.

And there was little change in the order until Ballycassidy moved up and went on as the field entered the straight for the final time.

But from the third-last fence the race developed into a duel between L'Ami and Trabolgan and there was nothing to choose between the pair as they soared over the last together.

But Trabolgan found more when it mattered and last season's Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner hung on to the post to become the first horse since Burrough Hill Lad in 1984 to shrug off top weight and clinch the Cup.
