Gold wins for all-powerful Pipe
Timmy Murphy and Celestial Gold jump the last fence in the Paddy Power Gold Cup
Martin Pipe's domination of Cheltenham's Open meeting continued when Celestial Gold won the Paddy Power Gold Cup, forming one leg of a 801-1 four-timer for trainer and jockey Timmy Murphy.

Celestial Gold took the lead at the second last and the 12-1 shot did not let up despite the challenge of Ruby Walsh on Thisthatandtother.

Favourite Monkerhostin was third with long-time leader Ollie Magern fourth.

Champion trainer Pipe has now won the 2m 4f race seven times although it was a first success for Irish jockey Murphy.

It was a vintage day for Pipe, Murphy and champion owner David Johnson, who also had three other winners.

The Johnson-Pipe-Murphy team, who had a double on Friday, began the day by winning the first two races on the card with Over The Creek (9-4f) and Vodka Bleu (11-8f).

Then came the victory with Celestial Gold, who ironically was seen as a reserve for Johnson and Pipe's original first choice, Our Vic, the ante-post favourite for the race until he had to be withdrawn early last week with a muscle injury.

And in the following race, the Servo Computer Services Trophy, chaser Stormez made a late run through the field to snatch victory at 7-1.

Johnson revealed afterwards that his biggest hope for the day had been Therealbandit, who led before fading and finishing unplaced behind The Dark Lord in the Listed Lombard Properties Handicap Hurdle.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime day. I thought we had a couple of good chances, but this will never happen again," said Johnson.

Celestial Gold is now one of the favourites for the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury but Pipe said he was by no means certain to line up.

"The Hennessy is the obvious race but I wouldn't be certain about anything yet," he said.

Murphy paid tribute to his mount after their victory in the 110,000 contest.

"We were just worried about the trip but they went a real good gallop and he settled really well.

"To be fair to him, he's as tough as old boots and he just galloped to the line."
